A deeply felt film that is an autobiographical account of director Louis Malle's moving childhood experiences in Nazi-occupied France during World War II. When the priest in charge of his Catholic boarding school shields several Jewish children from the Nazis, young Julien befriends one of the Jewish boys. They develop a touching friendship mixed with poignant, humorous and perilous moments as the story leads to its haunting finale.
