Product Overview

This is no ordinary book. It is a set of probing questions (1,450 in fact) designed to help individuals or groups, especially groups, to dive deeply into Saint John’s Gospel. No answers are provided, but the questions are phrased in such a way as to set a person in a reliable direction for finding the answers.

The questions correspond to the verses of the Gospel and require active and personal interaction. Some of the questions are easy, some difficult, and they are marked accordingly. Some questions include background information or hints that help the reader along. Some were written with a fair bit of humor. Any person or group using these questions to explore John will find themselves entertained as well as informed and inspired.

Editorial Reviews

"Combine the brilliant mind of Peter Kreeft with the richness of Saint John's Gospel, and you have a dynamic study full of intrigue, new horizons, and new depths, which make the Bible come alive. This is no average Bible study. Probes forces you to engage the text, think below the surface, and make the discoveries yourself."
— Steve Ray, Author, St. John's Gospel: A Bible Study Guide and Commentary

"Peter Kreeft undertakes an original and provocative approach to the Gospel of Saint John. Rather than interpreting the text through modern Biblical scholarship, Kreeft poses probing questions that emerge from the Gospel, opening the reader to a deeper personal encounter with God. For those eager to engage their intellect prayerfully, this 'deep sea dive' into John's Gospel promises to yield rich spiritual treasure."
— Alan Schreck, Professor of Theology, Franciscan University of Steubenville

Without God there is no peace in life

Posted by Charlie Schmidt on Aug 12th 2019

Probes, by Boston College philosophy professor Peter Kreeft is a series of questions and insights regarding the Gospel of John in the New Testament. Often the key to understanding something is asking the right questions, and this book does indeed ask many of the right questions. Peter Kreeft is a modern-day Thomas Aquinas who writes clearly and profoundly. Here are some of Kreeft’s insights: In John 16:33 Jesus said: “I have said this to you, that in me you/05/have peace. In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.” Here, the insight is that without God, there is no purpose in life, and there is no peace in life. Happiness is deeper than pleasure, and joy is deeper than happiness (taken from how the apostles suffered in their evangelizing, but they were joyful despite their sufferings). The point is that happiness is doing good, not feeling good. If you buy and read this gem of a book, it will help you to do God’s work on earth.
