Based on the heroic true story of Henriette Dalille in pre-Civil War New Orleans, Vanessa Williams portrays the beautiful African-American daughter of a wealthy white plantation owner and his kept mistress who goes against the wishes of her family, striving to serve God and the needs of the poor, abandoned slaves and their children. Fighting against the gravely unjust rules of society and rampant racism, Henriette must choose between the great pressure of traditional arranged marriage, the true devoted love of a kind French doctor, or the call to give her life to God and the service of society's outcast. Setting out on a journey fraught with danger, Henriette inspires others to follow her example, eventually founding the Sisters of the Holy Family, and becoming the first African-American candidate for canonization.
